Why Cade Cunningham can lead the Pistons to the Playoffs

The Detroit Pistons have quietly been a much-improved team in a top-heavy Eastern Conference with just four teams currently above .500. Last season, the Pistons won just 14 games but already have eight wins in late November. It took the Pistons until February 8th to win their eighth game of the season last year. Though the Pistons are still a young team, their steady improvement and lack of quality teams in the East gives them a chance to contend for the play-in and possibly make the playoffs. They will need their star player, Cade Cunningham, to take the lead to achieve this.

Former #1 overall pick Cade Cunningham is one of the most underrated players in the NBA. He is currently achieving career highs in points, assists, and steals. Cunningham is averaging 23.5 points, 8.9 assists, and 7.2 rebounds per game in 17 games this season. If he maintains this performance level, he will likely be named an All-Star for the first time in his career. Winning games could also bolster his All-Star candidacy, especially since the Pistons are currently in 10th place in the Eastern Conference. Despite Cunningham missing the last couple of games due to a hip injury, the Pistons hold an 8-11 record, just one game out of the sixth seed. This situation highlights how competitive the conference has been so far this season.

The Pistons had the worst record in the league last year, finishing with a 14-68 record. Despite this, they only secured the fifth pick in the NBA draft due to the draft lottery. However, they have taken a step forward and seem on track for a brighter future. Cade Cunningham is not the only reason for their improved start to the season; the Pistons also have other emerging young players, such as Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren.
