What should we expect from Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans this season?

The new-look New Orleans Pelicans along with the return of a healthy Zion Williamson both have lofty expectations despite being a relatively young team in a tough western conference. Still, that didn't keep the Pelicans from being listed as the 3rd best team in the west according to ESPN's season projections. The projection has them winning 47.6 games which would be a considerable improvement over their win total of last season where, they won just 36 games. This improvement is largely based on what we expect to be a dominant season from their superstar, Zion Williamson.

When looking at the projections, one has to wonder if it is fair to expect the Pelicans to be above teams like the Grizzlies, Clippers, or defending champion Warriors? Although the Pelicans will be an exciting team to watch I'd have to say no as all those teams are more talented and more experienced. With that said, I would say its more likely for the Pelicans to finish as a 5th seed at best which might limit their playoff success as they likely won't have home court advantage in the playoffs.

A big part of what will help the Pelicans have success next season is not just a healthy Zion Williamson although, he will be a huge factor. The player I think could have a huge impact on their success as he begins his first full season with the Pelicans is one of the underrated players in the league in CJ McCollum. Besides his on court performance, which will be excellent, it's his veteran presence that will make a huge difference for a young, talented Pelicans team. This will also take a lot of pressure off of Zion, who many expect to immediately get back to what he was in the 20-21 season when he was one of the top young players in the league.

The Pelicans, in my opinion, have a lot to prove this season before they can be expected to contend for a title. Especially since, there are so many teams in the west who could legitimately come out of the west this year. I still expect them to be a tough out as they were last year when they lost to the Suns in a competitive first round matchup. I believe that at their best with a healthy Zion, they are a team that should be considered a dark horse to make the western conference finals.
