What Should Expectations Be For Jaylen Brown And The Celtics After Historic Supermax Deal?

Updated: Aug 2, 2023

What can Brown do for you? Well for the Celtics, enough to receive the richest contract in NBA History. Jaylen Brown agreed with the Celtics on a five year 304 million dollar supermax contract. This contract keeps the 26 year old Brown under contract for the Celtics right as he enters the prime of his career. For Brown, this further cements his status as a premiere player in the NBA and a deal where in the case of the Celtics is an investment that is meant to lead to championships in the near future.

Jaylen Brown has been a player I have considered closer to a 1b option more so than a #2 to his superstar teammate Jayson Tatum. Especially when you consider the fact that in his lone final appearance so far he was leading scorer for the Celtics against the Warriors averaging 23.5 points per game. The "Jays" are one of the most talented duos in the NBA and with Brown signing his supermax deal will likely keep them together for the foreseeable future.

Last season, Brown averaged career highs in points, field goal percentage and rebounds with 26.6 points per game on 49.1% from the field and 6.9 rebounds per game. His stellar season earned him his first All-NBA Second Team honors which made him eligible for a supermax contract from the Celtics. The Celtics obliged and with the new contract comes heightened expectations as Brown along with Jayson Tatum have led the Celtics to multiple deep playoff runs but have yet to capture that elusive 18th title. More pressure will likely be on Brown in particular to follow up on his impressive All-NBA season with another great season this time potentially ending in a championship.

For the Celtics, both as a team and a organization expectations are as high as ever as they have long been a contending team over the last few seasons. However, the financial side of building a championship contending could become difficult in the near future primarily due to Tatum's impending supermax that could be worth up to $338 million. This puts more pressure on the Celtics to start winning championships with this group next season as in the next couple years Boston could find themselves impacted by huge luxury tax penalties by the 25-26 season. This could likely impact the Celtics keeping their duo of Tatum and Brown together. Still, with the Celtics retaining a player of Brown's talent who will be hitting his peak at age 27 by the start of the next season will keep the Celtics as a major title threat.
