How good can the Warriors be with Jimmy Butler?

Writer: Phillip WilsonPhillip Wilson

Since acquiring Jimmy Butler in a blockbuster trade with the Miami Heat near the trade deadline, the Golden State Warriors have experienced renewed energy. The trade not only brought in a talented two-way player capable of creating his own shot but also restored belief within the team. Draymond Green expressed his confidence during All-Star Weekend, proclaiming that the Warriors will win it all. However, the question remains: Do they have enough to be true championship contenders?

Since acquiring Jimmy Butler, the Warriors have won 6 of their last 7 games, scoring over 125 points in 5 of those victories. Butler has seamlessly integrated into the team, averaging 18 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game in his first 7 games. His most significant contribution has been on defense, particularly when paired with Draymond Green in a small-ball lineup. Butler's ability to guard both wing players and big men, along with his effectiveness in switching during pick-and-roll situations, enhances the Warriors' defensive versatility. While the small-ball strategy may struggle against larger teams like the Nuggets and Thunder, it could present challenges for several other teams in the Western Conference.

Despite their recent success, the Warriors still have a long way to go to be regarded as true championship contenders. Currently, they hold the eighth seed in the Western Conference but are just one game behind the Clippers for the sixth seed. Their chances of making a playoff run will largely depend on their seeding; finishing as the eighth seed would mean facing the Thunder in the first round. Therefore, avoiding the play-in tournament should be their primary goal for the remainder of the regular season. Fortunately, they have a favorable schedule ahead, with only three of their next ten games against playoff teams.

Jimmy Butler's addition to the Warriors will make them a formidable opponent come postseason time, thanks to his ability to perform at his best during the playoffs. With Steph Curry continuing to play at an extremely high level, this reduces the offensive pressure on Butler, allowing him to focus more on his impactful defensive play. However, given their current seeding position, it won't be easy for them to make a deep playoff run. Nonetheless, the trade for Butler has improved the team's overall strength and will help them finish the regular season on a strong note. Despite this, I still believe multiple teams in the West will be more competitive in the playoffs.
