Are the new-look Lakers championship contenders?

Recently, the Los Angeles Lakers have been winning consistently, and their expectations have soared following the impressive trade for superstar point guard Luka Doncic. Acquiring Doncic not only provides the team with elite talent to build around for the future but also raises their potential for this season. The extent of this potential is yet to be determined, but the developing chemistry between Doncic and LeBron James will be fascinating to observe in the coming weeks.

Los Angeles has won eight of its last ten games with four of those wins being against teams currently in the playoff picture. Arguably, their most impressive victories during this recent stretch were consecutive road wins against the Knicks and the Clippers. The team's biggest challenge will arise after the All-Star break when they face teams like Denver and Minnesota, which could exploit some of their defensive weaknesses. However, with seven of their next ten games being played at home, the Lakers have a strong opportunity to maintain the momentum they built leading into the All-Star break.

As of now, the Lakers have a record of 32 wins and 20 losses, placing them as the fifth seed in the Western Conference. They are just a game behind the Houston Rockets for the fourth seed. If they can position themselves as a fourth seed or better, they will have home-court advantage in a playoff series for the first time since 2023, when they reached the Western Conference Finals. Their best-case scenario would be to secure at least the third seed, allowing them to avoid facing the conference-leading Oklahoma City Thunder until the Conference Finals, should they advance that far.

Despite the combination of LeBron James and Luka Doncic, along with Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura, who are all playing excellent basketball as of late, the Lakers still have some significant weaknesses in their roster, especially on the defensive end. A backcourt featuring Doncic and Reaves may struggle against elite guards. Additionally, with the trade of Anthony Davis, the team lacks a true shot-blocker and defensive presence in the frontcourt, which could allow larger teams to exploit them in the paint.

However, Luka's ability to score and create plays for others at an elite level poses a considerable challenge for opposing teams. This dynamic will also reduce the pressure on LeBron James, who is performing at an All-NBA level in his 22nd season, allowing him to conserve energy for a potential deep playoff run.

Given that teams like Minnesota, Dallas, and Phoenix are underperforming in the Western Conference, the Lakers should be viewed as a team with championship potential.
